AI agent audit and compliance tools compared
No one tool does all of it, because "AI agent audit" means four different jobs. Agent observability tools (LangSmith, Langfuse, Arize, AgentOps) trace what an agent did so the team running it can debug and improve it. AI governance platforms (Credo AI, Holistic AI, IBM watsonx.governance) inventory AI systems and map them to policies and frameworks such as the EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001. AI insurers (Armilla, AIUC, Munich Re aiSure) assess AI risk and pay when an AI error costs someone. Agent identity products (Microsoft Entra Agent ID, Auth0 for AI Agents, Vouched) say who an agent is and what it may reach. APIR does a fifth job: a signed, hash-chained record of what an agent did that someone outside your company can check without trusting you.

APIR made this page, and APIR is one of the tools on it. Every line about another company comes from that company's own pages, read on 27 October 2026, with the link beside it. Where another tool suits you better, this page says so. Products change: check their pages before you rely on a line here.
Agent observability and tracing
For the team that builds and runs the agent: traces, evaluations and debugging.
| Product, and where it was read | In its own words | What it keeps or covers | Price on its own page |
|---|---|---|---|
| LangSmith (LangChain) Observability | "LangSmith Observability gives you complete visibility into agent behavior." | Step-by-step traces. "Base traces have a shorter retention period of 14 days. Extended traces have a longer retention period of 180 days." Self-hosting: "Self-host SmithDB inside your VPC so sensitive traces never leave your infrastructure." | Developer $0 / seat per month then pay as you go, up to 5k base traces / mo. Plus $39 / seat per month. Enterprise: custom pricing. |
| Langfuse Observability, open source | "Trace, evaluate, and improve AI agents with one open platform." | "Hierarchical traces capture every LLM call, tool invocation, and retrieval step." "All product features MIT licensed." Data access: 30 days (Hobby), 90 days (Core), 3 years (Pro). | Hobby: free, 50k units / month included. Core $29 / month. Pro $199 / month. Enterprise $2499 / month. |
| Arize AX and Phoenix Observability and evaluation | "The agent observability and evaluation platform." | Traces and evals. Retention: 15 days (Free), 30 days (AX Pro). Phoenix is "our open-source, local-first platform for tracing, evaluation, experimentation, and prompt iteration", "ELv2 licensed." | AX Free $0, 25k spans per month. AX Pro $50 per month. Enterprise: custom. |
| AgentOps Agent observability | "Trace, Debug, & Deploy Reliable AI Agents." | "Rewind and replay agent runs with point in time precision." "Unlimited log retention" on Pro. | Basic $0 per month, free up to 5,000 events. Pro starts at $40 per month. Enterprise: custom. |
Pick one of these when you are building an agent and need to see why it failed. They are built for the team that runs the agent. APIR is not a debugging or evaluation tool: no trace explorer for prompts, no evals.
AI governance platforms
For the risk, legal and compliance teams running an AI programme across many systems.
| Product, and where it was read | In its own words | What it keeps or covers | Price on its own page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credo AI AI governance | "AI Governance, Built for the Agentic Era" | "Discover and catalog every AI system, agent, vendor and model." "Policy packs for every major regulatory framework", including the EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF and ISO-42001, with "audit-ready evidence". | Not stated on the page read. |
| Holistic AI AI governance | "Govern AI across your enterprise. Discover every model, agent, and application." | "Controls mapped to EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001." "Full audit trail for regulators and internal review." | Not stated on the page read. |
| IBM watsonx.governance Enterprise AI governance | "IBM watsonx.governance helps enterprises govern any AI, anywhere with real-time visibility, enterprise controls, and continuous accountability" | "Track governance activities, decisions, and model changes with end-to-end traceability for reporting and accountability." | Free 14-day trial. Risk & Compliance Basic starting at $3,500 (monthly pricing); Advanced starting at $6,450 (monthly pricing). IBM says prices "are indicative, may vary by country". |
Pick one of these when you need an inventory of every AI system, risk reviews and policies mapped to the frameworks your regulator names. APIR is not a compliance platform: it runs no programme and writes no policy. A governance team can use APIR's record as evidence about one agent.
AI insurance and agent certification
For the day an AI error costs someone money.
| Product, and where it was read | In its own words | What it keeps or covers | Price on its own page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armilla AI AI liability insurance | "Affirmative AI liability coverage for companies that build and deploy AI, from predictive models to generative AI and agents." | Covers "AI Agent Mistakes: Claims arising from agent actions, including incorrect decisions and failures to escalate." "Limits up to US$25 million aggregate per insured, and up to US$5 million per model." "Our underwriters price AI risk from a technical review of each system". | Not stated on the page read. |
| AIUC and AIUC-1 Agent standard, certification and insurance | "AIUC certifies and insures AI agents to unlock secure adoption." | AIUC-1: "The standard for AI agent security, safety and reliability", audited "by an accredited auditor such as Schellman and Coalfire". Mandatory control E015: "Maintain logs of AI system processes, actions, and agent outputs where permitted to support incident investigation, auditing, and explanation of AI system behavior." | Not stated on the pages read. |
| Munich Re aiSure AI performance insurance | "aiSure is a comprehensive suite of coverage for AI systems." | "aiSure-backed performance warranties enable you to indemnify your clients for their financial losses or legal liabilities directly related to AI errors." | Not stated on the page read. |
Pick one of these when you need cover, or a certificate a buyer recognises. Armilla's own page says "Enterprise buyers now ask AI vendors for proof of insurance." APIR is not an insurer or a broker, has no underwriting partner, and certifies no one. What it can give an underwriter or an auditor is the agent's history, checkable without trusting the vendor.
Agent identity and access
For controlling who an agent is and what it may reach.
| Product, and where it was read | In its own words | What it keeps or covers | Price on its own page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Entra Agent ID Agent identity | "Microsoft Entra Agent ID is an identity and security framework that extends Microsoft Entra capabilities to AI agents." | Agent activity in the tenant's own logs: Microsoft's docs describe "how agent identity activities are logged in Microsoft Entra ID and how to access those logs using the Microsoft Entra admin center and Microsoft Graph." | "Agent ID is available for all Microsoft Entra customers." "Extending Microsoft Entra security features to agents requires Microsoft Agent 365", listed at $15.00 user/month, paid yearly. |
| Auth0 for AI Agents (Okta) Agent authentication and authorisation | "Ship AI agents, not identity work" | "Auth0 ties each transaction (human or AI-driven) to verified identity with built-in audit trails and compliance controls." Agents can "request user consent for sensitive actions via push notification, SMS, or email using CIBA". | Free $0 / month, up to 25,000 monthly active users. Essentials $35 / month and Professional $240 / month, each up to 500 monthly active users. |
| Vouched Know Your Agent Agent identity verification | "With KYA-OS, agents can prove who they represent and whether they have explicit permission to act." | "Authorize verified agents with cryptographic identity, scoped delegations, tool-level permissions, and user consent." "Maintain complete audit trails for security, compliance, and oversight." | Not stated for Know Your Agent on the pages read. |
Pick one of these to control access inside your company, or to let a website recognise an agent acting for a person. Identity says who the agent is. It does not by itself give an outsider a record of what the agent did. See APIR and Microsoft Entra Agent ID.
APIR: the record an outsider can check
APIR gives every AI agent signed papers and a tamper-evident work history that buyers, auditors and insurers can check without trusting you.
| Product, and where it was read | In its own words | What it keeps or covers | Price on its own page |
|---|---|---|---|
| APIR Evidence record for AI agents | "APIR gives every AI agent signed papers and a tamper-evident work history that buyers, auditors and insurers can check without trusting you." | Per agent: Ed25519-signed papers under did:web:apir.ai, a mandate, and an insert-only, SHA-256 hash-chained log book whose head is timestamped nightly by an outside RFC 3161 authority. Anyone checks it free at apir.ai/check-agent, with no account, or offline against the published key. | The check: free, forever. First agent: free. Wage AUD 99 per agent, per month; Crew AUD 499 per month, up to ten agents. Evidence Pack AUD 499, one-time. |
What we found on 27 October 2026: on the pages we read, none of the thirteen products above described its logs as signed, hash-chained or tamper-evident, or said an outside party could check the record without access to the product. Vouched signs an agent's identity and delegations, AIUC-1 relies on an accredited auditor, and Microsoft's agent logs sit in the tenant's own Entra logs. A product can do more than its marketing pages say, so check their documentation for your case.
APIR does not trace prompts for debugging, run evals, keep an AI inventory, map policies, insure anything or certify anyone. Its log book proves what an agent reported and that nobody changed it afterwards, not that the report was complete.
Which one fits your problem
They are not either-or. Most teams that need one need two.
- Your agent fails and you need to see why: an observability tool such as LangSmith, Langfuse, Arize or AgentOps.
- You run AI across a large organisation and answer to a regulator: a governance platform such as Credo AI, Holistic AI or IBM watsonx.governance.
- You need money when an AI error costs someone: an insurer such as Armilla or Munich Re aiSure, or AIUC-1 certification with AIUC.
- You need to control what an agent can reach: an identity product such as Microsoft Entra Agent ID, Auth0 for AI Agents or Vouched.
- Someone outside your company has to check what your agent did without trusting you: that is the gap APIR fills. Check an agent, free, or paper your first agent, free.
A team can trace with Langfuse, govern with Credo AI, insure with Armilla and still hand a buyer an APIR Evidence Pack. APIR takes events from an agent on any stack through one API call.
Questions people ask
What tools keep an audit trail for AI agents?
Four kinds, for different readers. Observability tools such as LangSmith, Langfuse, Arize and AgentOps keep traces for the team running the agent. Governance platforms such as Credo AI, Holistic AI and IBM watsonx.governance keep governance records and audit trails for compliance teams. Identity products such as Microsoft Entra Agent ID and Auth0 log authentication and access. APIR keeps a signed, hash-chained log book that someone outside the company can verify without trusting it. Read from each company's own pages on 27 October 2026.
What is the difference between agent observability and an evidence record?
Observability is for the team that runs the agent: traces, evaluations and debugging, kept in that team's tool. An evidence record is for a reader outside the team, such as a buyer, an auditor or an insurer: signed, insert-only, hash-chained and timestamped by an outside authority, so it can be checked without access to the team's tools.
Is APIR a compliance platform?
No. APIR does not run a governance programme, write policies or audit anyone. Governance platforms such as Credo AI, Holistic AI and IBM watsonx.governance do that. Compliance teams can use APIR's record as evidence about an agent.
Does APIR insure AI agents?
No. APIR is not an insurer or a broker and has no underwriting partner. Armilla offers AI liability insurance, Munich Re offers aiSure, and AIUC certifies and insures AI agents. APIR keeps the record of what an agent did, which anyone, an underwriter included, can check.
Which AI agent audit tool is best?
It depends on who needs the answer. To debug your own agent, use an observability tool. To run an AI governance programme, use a governance platform. To transfer the financial risk, use an insurer. To control access, use an identity product. When someone outside your company must check what your agent did without trusting you, use an evidence record such as APIR.
Can an outside party verify LangSmith or Langfuse traces on their own?
The LangSmith and Langfuse pages read on 27 October 2026 describe traces kept for the team that runs the agent, with retention limits and self-hosting options. They did not describe signing the traces or letting an outside party verify them without access to the tool. Check their documentation for your case.
